HAWC PROJECT

The University of Chicago (UC) is designing and assembling a scientific research instrument that will attach to the Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). NASA Goddard assisted by designing and building some of the key components. The instrument is called HAWC, or High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera. The HAWC instrument is scheduled to be delivered in 2006 to NASA Ames, where the SOFIA observatory will operate. The design of the HAWC instrument has undergone significant review and testing, and its airworthiness will be fully certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Manufacturing of the HAWC instrument has been undertaken at a variety of locations, including several reputable commercial machine shops in the Chicago area and here at the University of Chicago. Assembly and extensive testing of the HAWC instrument prior to delivery will occur at Yerkes Observatory.
